2018 seems to be a big year for both BioWare and EA, and for the same reasons- this is the year where they need to redeem themselves after what happened in 2017. They can both make huge strides toward that end with the upcoming release of Anthem– if they get things right. And it looks like they’re working on doing just that.
Brenon Holmes, who’s the Technical Design Director on Anthem, recently replied to several fan comments and questions on a Reddit post regarding community feedback for the game, and in the process, gave us some new details on how the game might function. Most notable, perhaps, is the fact that BioWare are going to look into creating PC test areas for Anthem, similar to what Bungie have done with Destiny and Ubisoft with The Division.
At least, Holmes says, this is something that they’re going to discuss in the future- whether or not it’s something that actually ends up happening is unconfirmed. “This is something I think we’re pretty interested in,” Holmes said in a comment. “We’re still working out a lot of the details but I’ll make sure I bring this up in our next sync.”
In another reply, though, Holmes did go on to mention that having separate test areas for each of the platforms the game is launching on will obviously complicate things a bit- it’s also unavoidable, due to balancing issues, which makes it all even more complicated. “That does complicate things quite a bit,” he said. “Ideally you’d probably want one test environment for each platform (depending on whether or not the platforms could share environments or not).”
